How can I see my icon files better in LibreOffice?...

There is just a snag with some of my files, and I found a solution to fix that.

You only have to install this PPA in your pc.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:atareao/thumbnailers
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install lothumbnailer

Then of this, clean cache with:

rm ~/.cache/thumbnails/fail/gnome-thumbnail-factory/*
rm ~/.cache/thumbnails/large/*
rm ~/.cache/thumbnails/normal/*
killall nautilus

Top 50 distros of Linux

fsf Distribuciones Linux para todos: Top 50Systems or Linux distributions have been criticized by some for its no standardization for blurring the work of the entire development community hundreds of different distributions. This is true that creates problems, such as the need to create different packages for different package managers (.rpm, .deb, ...) and extra effort from the developers of applications and drivers to make them work well in any distro. Even for those who study on Linux it is tedious because you have to learn certain peculiarities of some distributions and handle all such packages.

That aside, I must say that there are as many distributions as tastes. Therefore we can benefit from this diversity and install the most appropriate for our work or purpose. This article list the 50 most used Linux distributions. The Top 50 is as follows in this order:

Install the latest version of Gambas on Ubuntu and begins to program applications

gambas ubuntu
Gambas Almost Means Basic, is analogous to the Visual Studio on Windows. It is a visual programming environment for BASIC -derived much like Java- and allows us to develop applications easily, thanks to that program in a high-level code.
It's as easy as dragging the item you want to include and scheduling function. The best of this programming environment is definitely, which is open source, it is distributed in GPL, and therefore we have daily updates to fix bugs and add new features.
Gambas is so simple you do not need prior knowledge of any programming language. Just you need to have a hand and freely -free and time to learn, so it is perfect for students who are just beginning. In this case we will learn how to install the latest released from the repository version with these simple steps:

Open the terminal command.

Enter these commands one by one:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:-team shrimp / prawn-daily

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install gambas3

With these commands get the latest released Gambas, currently version 3.8.1- go through, but we want the most stable we can use these other commands, but be aware that we can never add two PPA at a time, we can only choose one, as if not provoke a mistake and have to start the process from the beginning, first cleaning the installation:

     Open the terminal command.
Enter these commands one by one:

     sudo add-apt-repository ppa: shrimp-team / gambas3

     sudo apt-get update

     sudo apt-get install gambas3

I personally recommend this latest version, which is stable, if you're starting out, because the other can give some other error. The best thing about this environment, if we come from Visual Basic, is that we have an interpreter who translates our programs to Gambas can interpret and compile without problems.

How to install MiniTube, to enjoy Youtube from your Desktop

minitubeMiniTube is a light and native application for Linux desktops with which you can watch YouTube content without opening a browser window. To do all that is needed is to find what we see in the search box, and search the content MiniTube showing immediate results. This will have two types of search: by channel and by keyword.

MiniTube has unlimited video streaming and playback application is smooth and instantaneous without notice buffering video without displaying any advertising-at least while I've been probando-. And best of all: MiniTube not need Flash Player to run.

The purpose of MiniTube is to offer an almost television user experience and not clone the YouTube web interface. It is not a creator of playlists, but you can create your own. You could say that until recently it easier to find videos on YouTube that interest you and get to see them.

In the lower right corner of MiniTube you can change the video quality. You can choose between three different resolutions: 360 points, 720 points and 1080 points, and this is independent of the options that the video quality offered on the web. This means you could choose to view a video in HD and display in a lower resolution, because it is not available in that capacity.

Installing MiniTube

To install MiniTube will not resort to the usual method of adding a PPA, resynchronize the repositories and install the package. In this case we will need to use a different method, which also vary depending on whether we use a 64-bit or 32-bit.

Minitube to install a 32-bit system introduces these commands in Terminal:

sudo apt-get install libqt5widgets5 libqt5network5 libqt5script5 libqt5sql5 libqt5sql5-sqlite libqt5dbus5 phonon4qt5 libphonon4qt5-4 phonon4qt5-backend-gstreamer
 wget -O minitube32.deb http://flavio.tordini.org/files/minitube/minitube.deb
 sudo dpkg -i minitube32.deb

32-Bits OS:

sudo apt-get install libqt5widgets5 libqt5network5 libqt5script5 libqt5sql5 libqt5sql5-sqlite libqt5dbus5 phonon4qt5 libphonon4qt5-4 phonon4qt5-backend-gstreamer
 wget -O minitube64.deb http://flavio.tordini.org/files/minitube/minitube64.deb
 sudo dpkg -i minitube64.deb

Enjoy it :D

Ubuntu 15.10 Beta 1 Is Now Available to Download

download-now-tile
releases in the Ubuntu 15.10 Wily Werewolf development cycle are now available for download.
Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu GNOME, Ubuntu MATE and Xubuntu are among the spins taking advantage of this development stop-gap.
The regular version of Ubuntu sits this round out and will issue its first, and only, beta snapshot next month.
Scroll on down to get a digest of what’s new in Ubuntu 15.10 Beta 1 flavours and to grab yourself an .iso image to trial out.

What’s New in Ubuntu 15.10 Beta 1?

new plasma desktop

The array of changes put forward by the Ubuntu family differs dramatically between releases.

Kubuntu 15.10 Beta 1 features the biggest set of changes. It offers the shiny new Plasma 5.4 desktop as default (see our earlier post for more on what that brings) and offers the latest KDE Applications 15.08 suite.

Link: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/releases/wily/beta-1/

Ubuntu GNOME 15.10 Beta 1 offers much of the latest GNOME 3.16 stack – enjoy it while it’s current, as 3.18 is on the way!. You get GNOME-Shell 3.16, a stack of GNOME 3.16 applications, a new GNOME getting started guide and GNOME Photos installed by default (Shotwell remains available).

Link:  http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-gnome/releases/wily/beta-1/

Lubuntu 15.10 Beta 1 sees only minimal bug fixes applied. Once again, all development effort is focused on getting the new LxQt desktop ship-shape in time for its tentative use as Lubuntu default in October 2016.

Link: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/releases/wily/beta-1/

Xubuntu 15.10 Beta 1 swaps hardy office stalwart Abiword with LibreOffice Writer, something some have long considered overdue. It also ships updates for a sizeable set of the default Xubuntu app stack, including new versions of gMusicBrowser, LightDM-GTK-Greeter and the nimble Thunar file manager.

 Link: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/wily/beta-1/

Finally, Ubuntu MATE 15.10 Beta 1 bumps the MATE desktop to version 1.10 (“mostly”), offers a refreshed MATE welcome tool, a new version of the helpful MATE Tweak Tool and integrates Deja Dup backup into the Caja file manager.

Beta = bugs

Beta releases of Ubuntu are not suitable for use as your default OS as the likelihood of bugs, breakages and other potential headaches remains high.
Ubuntu 15.10 final will be available to download on October 22, 2015.

What Linux distribution is used in Google?

A month ago it became known that Google wanted to get rid of security threats that constantly appear in Windows, and announced that all employees of the company would have to work since then either Mac OS X or Linux.

Leaving aside the debate on the real reasons for Google, and further assuming that there will be many of the "non-technical Google" users probably prefer Mac OS X to Linux, the question is clear: if a Google employee chooses Linux operating system ... what distribution or distributions can be used? Does Google internal distro as some analysts say?

The answer to that question is difficult to answer, because despite leaks that often appear on those details on all types of technology companies, has never been officially confirmed that Google be given its own Linux distribution.

Some might assume that Chromium OS / Chrome OS, the operating system based on Linux, would be the choice in this case, but her condition is still preliminary and probably not in Google as recommended for production environments to their own employees.

And that's where some speak of Goobuntu, an unofficial Linux distribution that would be based on a Long Term Support edition of Ubuntu and Google have tailored to your own needs.

Both Google and Mark Shuttleworth have spoken on several occasions that Goobuntu exists and is used internally in the offices of Google, but as Shuttleworth himself said in that post in early 2006, it is likely that there are also other versions "Googleadas" distros like Red Hat or Debian:

Google uses lots of Linux internally, I imagine they also have their own versions of Red Hat, SUSE, Debian, perhaps even Gentoo and of course Ubuntu. So don’t read too much into their use of Ubuntu – it’s just part of the picture, and nothing to get overly excited about. The “goobuntu” you may have heard of is just a modified version of Ubuntu. Technically, there’s likely to be a “goobian” and a “goohat” too :-) . The good news is that the guys there have been good about sending us patches, and we do our best to integrate them into mainstream Ubuntu and push them on to Debian and upstream.

So is this distribution that Google encourages its users? And if so, why not let others take advantage of these improvements made by Google itself?

Linux The Safest OS.

shutterstock_167787626
February 10, the International Safety Day is celebrated on the Internet and many sites related to the world of technology that provide special articles with tips and warnings of all kinds. As an example, these tips to safely navigate our fellow publishing MCPRO.

However, most sites forget to give advice or at least a suggestion that efficiency is proven, is that Linux will be more secure than other operating systems.

OS X may be more secure than Windows, but respects user privacy? Do you have backdoors? Edward Snowden says iOS and the latter has not been the only one, so ... In any case, privacy is not the same as security, but like it. And if OS X has these problems, Windows ... Windows is not going to tell you who do not know anything.

But we do not want to fall into the trap of simplicity: an original Windows system, well-managed and used, it can be a very secure system. This does not mean that Linux follow a couple of steps above not being based on its design and other features. For example, a phishing only saves you paying attention to what you do, while it is virtually impossible Infectés your Linux system running something-unless you purposely look, of course.

In short, if you want more security to surf the Internet, switch to Linux. And if you want more privacy, too. Free software is beneficial for different reasons and these are two of the important. When you do, put a little on your part and you feel very safe.

ATMs hacked Windows XP with SMS

ATM_WindowsXP
Symantec has demonstrated the ease to hack ATMs with Windows XP, showing the danger of keeping machines with the operating system when Microsoft ends its support on 8 April.
If the market share of Windows XP on the desktop computer market is 29 percent with special emphasis on companies, the situation is much worse ATMs since Windows XP governs 95% of all global ATM.
Hackers would not have expected or the end of support and exploiting vulnerabilities would already be using a combination of hardware and software whose base turns essentially on installing a malware known as Ploutus, a more sophisticated variant of Backdoor known. Ploutus discovered in late 2013.
The interesting thing is that this variant Ploutus allows cybercriminals send a command via SMS to ATM committed and then collect the money dispensed by the machine. It may seem incredible, but this technique may be being used worldwide at this time as shown by Symantec with great detail.

Has been a long road since the previous version, but the wait is over: Mageia 5 is submitted to all complete and polished than ever.

The installer system has undergone much work the developers of the distribution to ensure that even "the most exotic settings" you have secure boot Microsoft, and such dedication installer system itself benefits in other sections, such as RAID support, integration GRUB2, changes in the partitioning and error correction.

Lolcat, a fun application of Linux terminal that will fill your screen color.

lolcat

Lolcat is proof that you can turn the Linux terminal fun, and that is that the fund should not impose much respect as usual. This is a program that works through a pipeline that gives the rainbow colors to whatever comes in the terminal.
It really has not much else, it is just a small tool to make the terminal more fun, but if you want to have it on your computer you will have to go through a few steps of installation. This is because Lolcat has no official repositiorios, and therefore we must get it and set it in other ways.
However, once we got Lolcat can begin to play. It is designed to be a fun tool that will help us to give a different touch to what we do in the terminal.Installing Lolcat
To use Lolcat in our Linux have to first install Ruby first of all. To do this open a terminal and use the following command:

 sudo apt-get install ruby

As ruby is installed we check its version with this other command:

 ruby --version

 ruby 2.1.5p273 (2014-11-13) [x86_64-linux-gnu]

Now that we have Ruby can already consider installing Lolcat. For it will download a ZIP file of the network and install it with these commands:

 wget https://github.com/busyloop/lolcat/archive/master.zip
 unzip master.zip
 cd lolcat-master/bin
 sudo gem install lolcat

And with this we have installed and ready to run Lolcat.

Usando Lolcat

Lolcat funciona como un pipeline tal y como señalábamos antes, y por ello tenemos que “hacer que un comando pase por Lolcat”. Puede pasar cualquiera, así que esto es lo que pasa cuando hacemos un ls -la | lolcat:

lolcat ls

Interesting, right? Well, if you can still install cowsay it is more. For that we open a terminal and type the following:

 sudo apt-get install cowsay

Tickr Is An Open-Source RSS News Ticker for Linux Desktops

rss-tickr

Call me Joey Calamezzo; I put mine on the bottom TV news station style.
“Over to you, sub-heading.”

RSS — Remember That?

“Thanks paragraph ending.”
In an era of push notifications, social media, and clickbait, cajoling us into reading the latest mind-blowing, humanity saving listicle ASAP, RSS can seem a bit old hat.
For me? Well, RSS lives up to its name of Really Simple Syndication. It’s the easiest, most manageable way to have news  come to me. I can manage and read stuff when I want; there’s no urgency to view lest the tweet vanish into the stream or the push notification vanish.
The beauty of Tickr is in its utility. You can have a constant stream of news trundling along the bottom of your screen, which you can passively glance at from time to time.
tickr close up
There’s no pressure to ‘read’ or ‘mark all read’ or any of that. When you see something you want to read you just click it to open it in a web browser.

Setting it Up

tickr-rss-settings
Although Tickr is available to install from the Ubuntu Software Centre it hasn’t been updated for a long time. Nowhere is this sense of abandonment more keenly felt than when opening the unwieldy and unintuitive configuration panel.
To open it:
  1. Right click on the Tickr bar
  2. Go to Edit > Preferences
  3. Adjust the various settings
Row after row of options and settings, few of which seem to make sense at first. But poke and prod around and you’ll controls for pretty much everything, including:
  • Set scrolling speed
  • Choose behaviour when mousing over
  • Feed update frequency
  • Font, including font sizes and color
  • Separator character  (‘delineator’)
  • Position of Tickr on screen
  • Color and opacity of Tickr bar
  • Choose how many articles each feed displays
One ‘quirk’ worth mentioning is that pressing the ‘Apply’ only updates the on-screen Tickr to preview changes. For changes to take effect when you exit the Preferences window you need to click ‘OK’.
Getting the bar to sit flush on your display can also take a fair bit of tweaking, especially on Unity.
Press the “full width button” to have the app auto-detect your screen width. By default when placed at the top or bottom it leaves a 25px gap (the app was created back in the days of GNOME 2.x desktops). After hitting the top or bottom buttons just add an extra 25 pixels to the input box compensate for this.
Other options available include: choose which browser articles open in; whether Tickr appears within a regular window frame; whether a clock is shown; and how often the app checks feed for articles.

Adding Feeds

Tickr comes with a built-in list of over 30 different feeds, ranging from technology blogs to mainstream news services.
feed-picker
You can select as many of these as you like to show headlines in the on screen ticker. If you want to add your own feeds you can: –
  1. Right click on the Tickr bar
  2. Go to File > Open Feed
  3. Enter Feed URL
  4. Click ‘Add/Upd’ button
  5. Click ‘OK (select)’
To set  how many items from each feed shows in the ticker change the “Read N items max per feed” in the other preferences window.

Install Tickr in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and Up

So that’s Tickr. It’s not going to change the world but it will keep you abreast of what’s happening in it.
To install it in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS or later head to the Ubuntu Software Centre but clicking the button below

Brand New Ubuntu Phone Goes on Sale Priced at €199

The third Ubuntu phone goes on sale today across Europe priced at €199.90.
The Bq Aquaris E5 Ubuntu Edition was announced last week and features a bigger screen and better cameras than the first Ubuntu phone released earlier in the year.
It also comes with improved battery capacity to help the device last longer and sharper, high-definition display.

More Ubuntu Phones Are Coming

Its arrival sees Ubuntu Phone releases beginning to pick up pace.
February saw the first Ubuntu Phone, the Bq Aquaris E4.5, go on sale in Europe. Chinese hardware company Meizu held a fire sale for its MX4 device in May.
Neither Canonical, Bq or Meizu is (yet) willing to say how many of Ubuntu Phones have been sold so far.

The Ubuntu Phone experience is built around Scopes
Meizu also plan to sell their handset in Europe later month through an ‘invite-only’ online sale.
Last week we exclusively revealed that Bq is working on another Ubuntu Phone.
This device will feature powerful hardware that supports Canonical’s “convergence” technology, and will  transform from a mobile phone to a desktop PC when connected to a monitor, keyboard and mouse.
Even better, it’s currently targeting an October 2015 release.
‘Check out the specs of the new Ubuntu Phone’
(tweet this)

Aquaris E5 Specifications

Back to the device almost literally in hand.
The Aquaris E5 Ubuntu Edition comes in one color, black, and one memory size, 16GB.
It has the same hardware specifications as the E4.5, using a quad-core MediaTek processor paired with 1GB RAM. This delvers decent performance when running the OS and multi-tasking with scopes and the (primarily web-based) apps available.

The cameras see improvements. Both rear and front shooters have been fitted out with BSI sensors and Largan lenses. The rear camera takes photos of up to 13 megapixels while the front snaps selfies of up to 5 megapixels in quality.
A MicroSD Card slot allows for storage expansion up to 32GB, while a standard micro-USB port is offered for charing and connectivity.

Buy the Bq Aquaris E5 Ubuntu Edition

‘A new 5-inch Ubuntu Phone is now available to buy’
The price of the phone starts at €199.90, cheaper than the same model as sold with Android but $30 more expensive than the Aquarius E4.5 Ubuntu Edition.
And this time around there are no limited-time “flash sales” or, like the plan for the Meizu MX4 which goes on sale later this month, any need to hunt down an invite.
But while the phone can be purchased from today orders won’t be processed until June 22nd.

Add a Google Now-Style Weather Applet to The Ubuntu Desktop

DeviantArt user satya164 has knocked together a Google Now-inspired theme for Conky, the popular Linux system monitor (and a whole heap more).
Unlike many Conky themes this one is light on information displayed, only showing weather and network usage.

But like most Conky themes it is a faff to set up.

How to Install Conky Google Now

The instructions below are for Ubuntu, but also apply to its flavours and other Ubuntu-based distributions like Linux Mint.
Before you do anything you first have to install Conky itself. If you’re reading this article on Ubuntu you can hit the button below to open an install prompt.

Ubuntu Software Center:  apt://conky-all
You may also need to grab Curl if it’s not already installed: apt://curl

Once you have fully downloaded the .Zip you need to extract it, and move the files inside to your home folder:
fodlering
That’s all that’s needed to install the Conky theme. But you’ll need to edit the weather location to match that of your own:
  • Go to weather.yahoo.com
  • Search for your location in the weather search box (underneath forecast)
  • Copy the numerical string in the URL
Now:
  • Open .conkyrc in your Home folder
  • Find the number: ‘2294941’
  • Replace it with the numerical string you copied from the Yahoo! Weather URL
  • Save
replace
If you like the font used in the screenshot, you can grab it from Font Squirrel (for free) – but install it before launching Conky from a Terminal with the command ‘conky’.
Want Conky to open when you login to Ubuntu? You’ll need to add it to Startup Applications.
  • Open ‘startup applications’ from the Dash
  • Click ‘Add’
  • In both name and command fields enter ‘conky‘ (without quote marks)
  • Save

Easily Change Color of Folder Icons in Ubuntu With This Tool

Ubuntu’s default folder icons are nice enough but their uniform orange appearance lacks personality.

To add a splash of vibrance we can use a small tool called ‘Folder Color’. It’s designed to work with Nautilus and can only be used with the default Ubuntu icon theme.
The name pretty much spells out its function: it lets you to change the colour of folders. With it you can make your essay documents folder red, your holiday photo directory yellow, and so on, with a simple right-click.

There’s really not an awful lot more to say about it. It’s not a separate icon theme and does not, yet, allow you to change the colour of the standard Home folder icons (Music, Photos, Documents, etc.).
Other than that it works as intended, has a fairly decent number of colour options available, and offers a handy link should you wish to ‘Restore to default’.

Installing Folder Color

While not a game-changing app Folder Color is nevertheless a useful tool to have if you ever fancy retooling your home folder to look like a rainbow.
The utility can be installed from a dedicated PPA using the command line and supports Ubuntu 13.10 and 14.04 LTS.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:costales/folder-color
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install folder-color
After installation has completed you will need to log out and back (or restart Nautilus) before the right-click options are listed.

Discover how to install Ubuntu and Unity 8!

unity 8

Canonical has just done can download and install Unity 8 on any Ubuntu system by simply adding a PPA, resynchronize the repositories and install the appropriate packages. The only two ways that had until now to try Unity eight-and Mir was also download an ISO image to execute the latest version of the desktop or run it on a virtual machine, or so we thought.None of the two solutions just mentioned is too attractive, but there is a third way that, ultimately, it is more comfortable, more elegant and, to top it off, runs on any operating system from Ubuntu 12.04 LTS version onwards.Apparently, this simple procedure to install Unity 8 has been available for quite some time, but was not announced properly fastened and very few people knew anything about him. Fortunately, there is always someone who is responsible for collecting this information, and we will offer it to our blog. It should work without any problem as long as the case of one of the supported versions of ubuntu.

How to install Unity 8.

Execute the follow commands.

 sudo apt-add-repository ppa:unity8-desktop-session-team/unity8-preview-lxc
 sudo apt-get update
 sudo apt-get upgrade
 sudo apt-get install unity8-lxc
 sudo unity8-lxc-setup

And that's it, basically. There is, however, a couple of points to mention. First, we see that the LightDM
that we receive when logging is something different from what we usually see,
and will cost a while until it is installed
It will also be necessary to restart the operating system.

This way you can have Unity 8 and Mir installed on your computer, and you can try new solutions
Ubuntu graphical environment before they are officially released.
